The Wooden Dummy

Anyone coming from a kung fu training background or training in one of the many of the fighting disciplines, will have at some point come across the 'Muk Yang Jong' or 'wooden dummy'.

This kung fu training equipment was designed to provide a human-like opponent upon which a student would be able to practice different combinations of punches, strikes and kicks without doing serious damage to a real live person!

Upon the central ‘trunk’ of the dummy, you will find several wooden ‘arms’ and ‘leg’ or legs that a practitioner can aim for and defend against, using whatever technique he/she is practising or being taught.

In the school, the dummy would have been floor mounted for stability. The later ‘wall mounted’ version developed out of Hong Kong Wing Chun and addressed the need for a training tool that could be used at home and in limited space.

When using a ‘Muk Yang Jong’ you will find this bad boy has endless stamina and the ability to absorb your punches without flinching or falling over which makes for quite a daunting opponent.

Of course, it is a great training tool and there are now different varieties of wooden dummy available. If you are working at home or training alone having a ‘dummy’ to fight against can seriously improve every aspect of technique, fitness and martial ability. Some of the benefits are:

  • You can train as and when you decide without having to leave the house or wait for martial arts school/dojo/gym opening hours.
  • Maximise your efforts by using your peak energy levels to train. Perhaps you train better in the early morning/late at night?
  • You will be using a properly designed piece of kit rather than something improvised D.I.Y. style, (who hasn’t tried that?)
If you are committed to improving your fighting prowess then you have to consider incorporating this piece of essential kung fu training equipment into your daily life.
